Babyface was born on April 10, 1958, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Marvin and Barbara Edmonds.He is the fifth of his parents’ six boys. Barbara worked as a manufacturing operator in a pharmaceutical factory. When Edmonds was in eighth grade, his father died of lung cancer. He then made the decision to pursue a career in music..He was a bashful boy who used songwriting to express himself. In Indianapolis, he attended North Central High School. He was given his moniker by funk singer Bootsy Collins when he was still a teenager, and it is a clear reference to his youthful appearance.He worked as a guitarist in the band Manchild. In 1982, Edmonds was a part of the funk group Redd Hott. Following that, he was a member of the light-funk and R&B group the Deele, which also included drummer Antonio “L.A.” Reid. On the 1983 Midnight Star song Slow Jam,Babyface received one of his first major writing credits. In 1988, Babyface and Reid quit The Deele.

Whitney Houston’s 1990 song I’m Your Baby Tonight was written by Babyface. It was Babyface’s first number one hit in the United States. He also wrote the number one song “I’ll Make Love to You” by Boyz II Men in 1994. Babyface created the music for the 1995 film Waiting to Exhale, which featured Whitney Houston’s number one single Exhale (Shoop Shoop). Brandy and Mary J. Blige also had successes on the album. “Lovers,” his debut studio album, was released in 1986. His 1989 album Tender Lover debuted at number one on the R&B chart in the United States. His triple platinum album For the Cool in You was released in 1993. Babyface’s very popular album The Day was released in 1996, followed by Christmas with Babyface in 1998, Face 2 Face in 2001, “Grown & Sexy” in 2005, “Playlist” in 2007 and 2015’s Return of the Tender Lover
